BGSC well represented at Provincial B Cup - U17 Impact win Silver Medal!
The BC Soccer B Cup Provincial tournament, for girls, was held this past weekend in Penticton and Burnaby Girls was represented by two of our Division 1 teams.

By all reports, the teams had a great time and played some outstanding soccer.

In the end, the U15 Blaze came up a bit short, finishing in 7th place with a 5-2 victory over the Williams Lake Storm.

Our U17 Impact were the other team participating, after having been offered a late opportunity to enter the tournament.  They came home with the Silver medal, after finishing tops in their group and having to play their opponent who had given them problems all season long.  The U17 Impact were also recipients of the BC Soccer Fair Play Award, after completing the tournament without having received any cards and for their sportsmanship.  The Fair Play award is given to one team in per age group at each of the 3 BC Soccer Provincial tournaments that were all held in July.

Congratluations to all, for having been such positive representatives for both Burnaby District and the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club.  Your club is very proud of you.

The BGSC U14 Galaxy took first place in the U14 (Div 1-2) grouping at the 2014 Richmond Thanksgiving Tournament.  The Galaxy went undefeated in group play winning by scores of 5-0, 3-0 and 2-1 against a very strong RSA Selects Team.  The Galaxy clinched the gold after winning a hard fought 1-0 game over the Surdel Scorpians to repeat their first place finish in the 2013 tournament.

Congratulations to the Burnaby Girls Galaxy - it was a focused team effort and the coaching staff are extremely proud of all the players.   In four games, the Galaxy were undefeated, scored 11 goals and only conceded once.

U16 Intensity Win CMFSC Labour Day Tournament
A rash of injuries necessitated an extra-ordinary effort by the under manned U16 Intensity to win their grouping at the 2014 CMFSC Labour Day Tournament.  The weekend culminated in an exciting shoot out win. Congratulations to the team for showing perseverance and to coaches Zac and Staz for providing leadership the team needed.

BGSC U13 Blaze Wins BCCGSL Group 2 League Championship
The Burnaby Girls U-13 Blaze had an outstanding season. The Blaze finished league play with a record of 9 wins 4 draws and 2 losses, scoring 28 goals and conceding only 11. In league championship play, the Blaze recorded 3 wins and 1 draw in the round robin to finish second and advance to the final. In a sensational championship game the Blaze faced their closest rivals from South Surrey the CFC U-13 Royal.  These two teams had tied on three previous occasions before meeting for a showdown in the championship. The Blaze conceded a goal early but fought back and once again the teams tied in regular time (2-2). In overtime each team managed another 2 amazing goals with Burnaby scoring the last when only a second remained on the clock.  With emotions racing on both sides the Blaze pulled it together and in the eighth round of shootout earned the winning goal.

Congratulations to the BGSC Blaze for their determination and hard work throughout the season.

U17/18 BGSC Metro Blizzard win Mayor's Cup
Congratulations to the U17/18 BGSC Metro Blizzard for placing first in the Surrey Mayor's Cup, which took place March 15-16 2014.

BGSC U13 Galaxy Wins Thanksgiving Tournament
Richmond Soccer hosted their annual Thanksgiving Tournament for U11-U18 teams and this year, there were six teams competing in the Girls U13 Division 2 bracket.  Our girls won their three games and finished first in pool play and qualified for the final game against SUSC Titanium. In the final game, the Galaxy conceded an early goal to the Titanium’s.   To their credit and for the second time in the tournament, our players pulled together, carried on with their willingness to compete and passed the ball well to maintain an overall possession advantage.   By the final whistle, the players had scored three unanswered goals and won the final game 3-1 to take home the gold.

Congratulations to the Burnaby Girls Galaxy for their play throughout the tournament - it was truly a team effort and the coaching staff are extremely proud of the players and their work to prepare for the games.   In four games, the Galaxy went 4-0, scored 12 goals and only conceded 2.

 -2012/2013 Season-

U14 Storm – BCCGSL C-Cup Champions
The Burnaby Girls U-14 Storm soccer team enjoyed an excellent season of soccer.  Storm finished in second place of league play in the BCCGSL Div. 3 with a record of 12 wins 2 draws and 4 losses.  During the season the storm scored 44 goals and conceded only 19 goals.  The C cup championships began as a single final knockout tournament that began with 32 teams.  The championship game was played on a cold April evening at Trillium field in Vancouver.  The Storm were up against Surrey FC who finished in first place with only 1 loss all season.  It was a very intense game that was tied 1-1 that went into overtime and then a shootout.  Storm players scored 4/5 penalty kicks to win the championship.  All year these girls focused on playing “STORM” soccer.  Together they played as a team.

Congratulations to the Storm and coaches Frankie Devita and Sue Isomura on a fantastic season of soccer.

U16 Red Rockets – BCCGSL CC-Cup Finalist

The U-16 Red Rockets had a very exciting season.  The team finished third in the Division and made it all the way to the CC Cup final to play against the TSA Tornados.  The game was a nail biter.  After regulation time and two 10 minute halves, the score was still 0-0 and the team lost in the shoot-out.  Coaches Ben Dong and Kelly Tyacke were proud of how dedicated the girls were and how hard they played all season.  Both coaches are looking forward to the 2013/2014 season.

Congratulations to the U16 Red Rockets, Coach Ben Dong, and Coach Kelly Tyacke.

U12 Sparks – BCCGSL CC-Cup Finalist

The U12 Sparks began the 2012/13 season by being selected the 8th BMO “Team of the Week”.  This win kicked off a 3 month ramp-up to the grand prize competition between each of the 15 selected teams from across Canada.

Meanwhile back on the pitch... the Sparks had been training all summer to prepare for the upcoming season in the BC Coastal Girls Soccer League cc division. The Sparks commitment to strive for continual improvement served them well and the team finished second in the division at the end of regular season league play.  Along the way, the Sparks organized a “Food Bank Fundraiser” jamboree in early December which resulted in some great soccer and a large food donation to the food bank.

In early March, the Sparks worked their way through three rounds of CC-Cup play to earn a spot in the final.  The cup final was played in the sun on a Sunday April 22nd at Trillium in downtown Vancouver. It wasn’t the Sparks’ day, and they ultimately fell to the Vancouver United Vipers. Nevertheless, every player stepped up proudly after the game to receive her medal, knowing that she had improved and succeeded.

Congratulations to the U12 Sparks and coach David Oliver and his staff on a very successful season.

U11 Fire wins SBMC Tournament

The BGSC U11 Fire capped off a successful season with a well-earned tournament victory in the 11/12 Division at SBMC’s 32nd Annual Youth Soccer Tournament.  The BGSC U11 Fire played teams from Aldergrove, Burnaby and Coquitlam where skill, trumped size and speed.  Great way to end the season.  Congratulations girls!

U11 Strikers win Gold

With the soccer season ending too soon and no Cup Play scheduled for the U11 Girls, Burnaby Girls Soccer Club kept the soccer season alive and keeping with the BGSC motto “A Place For Every Girl to Play”  ho stedthe 2013 Burnaby Cup Tournament on March 10th at Burnaby Lake West Sports Complex.

BGSC invited teams from Burnaby, Coquitlam, New Westminster and Pitt Meadows to play in a round-robin after a full season of friendly, yet competitive rivalry.   With the weather cooperating, all the girls played their final games of the season with heart and soul, as they had done all season long.  With only one sub on the sidelines, the BGSC U11 Strikers had to play hard in every game and their efforts paid off, as the BGSC U11 Strikers were victorious and ended the Tournament winning GOLD.   Every girl attending the Tournament left that day with a smile on their face and a medal around their neck and even one lucky girl from Coquitlam left with an autographed ball from the Whitecaps FC.    Congratulations,BGSC Strikers, great way to end the season!

BGSC U18 Strikers
 - 2012 BC Soccer Youth A cup Provincial Championships

Burnaby Girls Soccer Club is proud to announce the U18 Strikers have won a hard fought berth into the 2012 BC Soccer Youth A cup Provincial Championships to be held in Kamloops July 5th to 8th.

The Strikers placed fourth overall in league play and moved into the semifinals in Coastal Cup play against the league leading Richmond Selects. After a hard fought battle the BGSC Strikers lost in a close 2-1 game.

However the team came back in extra qualifying to play Surrey Guildford United 94 Selects on April 29th. The Strikers were hampered by illness and injury but battled from an early 1- nil deficit to a 3-2  victory in overtime.

The girls played hard and played well these past two weeks and have shown tremendous growth over the season, with almost half of the team never having playing experience at the Metro level.

Kudos also go out to Sidney Roy who was voted by the Metro Selects coaches as league MVP. This competition is the result of coaches voting throughout the season for game MVP.

- Burnaby Girls wish the Strikers success and more importantly wish them a thoroughly enjoyable experience! -

Labour Day Tournament (Surrey United SC Tournament)

BGSC U12 Select 2000 Captures 2011 Labour Day Tournament Title

Surrey United SC once again hosted their annual Labour Day Tournament for Select U11 and U12 teams.  This year saw eight teams compete in the Girls U12 division.  Our girls played three round robin games managing to win all three thereby qualifying for the Gold medal game, which was played on the holiday Monday.   In the other pool, the Surrey United Tornadoes, with whom a friendly yet competitive rivalry has been forming over the past year, emerged as the top team and faced off against our Select 2000s in the final.

Burnaby Girls, wearing their traditional red colours, got off to a fast start when Janika Sangha spotted Camila Gomez streaking down the left side and fed her a perfectly placed through ball; Gomez fought off a defender and then re-directed her own rebound off the goalie into the net five minutes into the game.  The intensity level and pace of the game never let up.  The teams battled hard throughout the first half with Burnaby holding the edge in play.  The teams headed into the break with the Select 2000s holding on to their slim 1-0 lead.  The Tornadoes, in their imposing all-black uniforms, rallied in the second half and looked to even the score but an insurance marker by Jessica Ambrosio off of an Emma Regan free kick in the last 5 minutes sealed the deal and the match ended 2-0.  The two teams will look to renew their rivalry in Coquitlam at the Thanksgiving Day Tournament in October.

Congratulations to the BGSC U12 Select 2000s - Amari Lewis, Camila Gomez, Emma Regan, Janika Sangha, Jessica Ambrosio, Julia Grosso, Kaela Hansen, Kayla Hayek, Kristen Naidu, Olivia Austin(K), Sarah Anna De Francesco, and Siena Porth – and to the coaches Carlos Grosso, Tony Ambrosio, and Lorrie Mercado-Hansen.

 -2010/2011 Season-

Thanksgiving Day Tournament (CMFSC Tournament)

U11 Select 2000 - Champions

The U11 Select 2000s had an impressive and successful tournament debut this past weekend at the Coquitlam Metro Ford-hosted Thanksgiving Tournament, which was open to Select U11 and U12 teams only. After being seeded first in their bracket, the girls' fortunes took a bit of a turn when they lost 1-0 to another pre-tournament favourite, the Surrey United Tornados.  The girls carried most of the play in the game but were unable to find their finish around their opponent's net.

Next up was their club co-Select team, the BGSC United.  After a hard-fought first half, which finished nil-nil, the 2000s managed to find their scoring touch in the second, finishing ahead 4-0 at full time.

The final round-robin game was against the spumescent Kerrisdale Cappucinos, who were in tough against the possession-style approach of their opponents, and the final score was 3-1 for Burnaby.

Finishing second in Bracket B meant crossing-over to play the semi-final against the host Bombers, who had finished first in Bracket A.

The game had perhaps extra significance since these two North District teams are likely to meet several times over the course of the regular season and, as many have speculated, are the pre-season picks to meet in the District Cup Final.  It was not Coquitlam's day however, as they lost their bid to reach the finals.

Burnaby played a relentless passing game that kept the Bombers at bay for most of the game.  The final score was 2-0 on goals by Emma Regan and Gigi Janes, as the Select 2000s advanced to the finals hoping to avenge their loss to the Surrey United Tornados, who had beaten the game Port Moody Stingers in the other semi-final.

Surrey turned the tables on Burnaby and played a strong first half, emerging with a 1-0 lead, scoring seconds before the end of the first half.   The Tornados kept the pressure on to start the second half and quickly went up 2-0.  After settling his troops and encouraging them to "play their game", Carlos Grosso's squad finally got rolling and started creating chances. About half-way through the second half, Emma Regan scored on a free kick to cut the lead in half. After that, the Burnaby team kept pressing until, with time expiring, Julia Grosso scored the equalizer on a terrific shot from the top of the goalie's box. The game would be decided on penalty kicks. Olivia Austin, Burnaby's keeper, made two great saves to keep the Tornados to a single goal in their first five shots.  The Select 2000s, unfortunately, were unable to capitalize, scoring only once themselves.

So it all came down to sudden death PKs.  Burnaby shot first....and Janika Sangha's low shot streaked into the corner of the net!  The spotlight fell on Olivia who could taste victory.  The shot from the penalty spot was a good one, low and toward the corner.  But Olivia was up to the task and dove across her net, stretching to make yet another spectacular save!  Champions!

After a well-fought, exciting game, the BGSC Select 2000 left with medals around their necks and with pride replacing the aches and pains of a long but successful tournament.  Congratulations girls!
